Winter Bait testing session on Grenville Lake by Jim Kelly

I Arrived at Grenville on Sunday 1st Jan for a two day session. I always try and fish the 2nd January as I caught my first 20lb common and my first winter 30 on this date. I had a good look around, the wind was blowing a hooligan, and hence I decided to set up with my back to the wind. Lee was in swim 33 and had caught 8 fish over the Christmas period. I decided to set up two swims down in 31 as Lee was due to leave the next day and I could follow him in. I didn’t catch in 31 and moved into 33 as soon as Lee left.

Over the next 24 hours the wind really got up, it was the night when trees, electric lines etc. were blown over. I could cast a long way as long as I could stand up!  Tactics were to fish as far out as possible. Terminal tackle was striptease coated braid fished with some of the coating removed. This was tied to a Kamasan B745 hook tied knotless knot. Bait wise, I have been working with quality baits to develop a hi-attract bait and I was using this. It hasn’t got a name yet. To cut a long story short I caught two fish during the next 24 hours. A 17lb plus scaly mirror and a 39lb 2oz mirror. What a fantastic start to a new year.
